Is Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) making a tidy profit out of charging people to park in Buckingham?
A Buckingham town councillor thinks he has uncovered figures that show it is.
Jon Harvey has been asking questionsl about the district council’s investments in Buckingham.
And he was struck by the amount of surplus AVDC makes from its car parks.
AVDC owns Cornwall’s Meadow Car Park and the car park at the Swan Pool, in both of which people now have to pay to park. It also owns Western Avenue and Stratford Field car parks, where parking is now free.
When he asked what profit AVDC makes from its town car parks, Mr Harvey was told there was a £96,600 excess of income over expenditure’.
Mr Harvey said: “Looking at the state of Cornwall’s Meadow Car Park, even after its spruce-up, I struggle to think that it costs anywhere close to that figure to manage the car park. This means that AVDC is profiting from our car park usage.”
An AVDC spokesman said: “The figure of £96,000 doesn’t include expenditure such as car park management, patrol officers, machine maintenance and cash collection.
“In addition, it doesn’t include non-budgeted repairs and maintenance – currently standing at net £13,000.”
Mr Harvey said: “I would like to know what maintenance has been done and how much it cost.
“The Buckingham people deserve full transparency.”
