And the rock and roll musical is wending its way back to the Waterside Theatre in Aylesbury later this month for another shot of Transylvanian pelvic thrusting to the Time Warp.

Writer Richard O’Brien’s classic musical tells the story of newly engaged Janet and Brad, two squeaky clean college kids, who get lost in the rain whilst on their way to visit their former college professor. They stumble upon the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite who is holding an annual convention of visitors from the planet Transsexual, and it turns out to be an adventure they will never forget.

Bursting at the seams with classic hits, plenty of basques, fishnets and suspenders, be warned, this show has rude parts!

O’Brien, who was born in Cheltenham in Gloucestershire and is now in his 70s living in New Zealand, explains the show’s enduring appeal. He said: “The fact it has such light hearted naughtiness, combined with root fairy tales has a lot to do with its longevity.

“When I wrote it I was a recent father of my first child and out of work. 1972 - 73 was a moment of change. Glam rock and overt sexuality was around, gay people were coming out and there was a buzz in the air.”

O’Brien believes the fact that people still get excited about the show now and its popularity with a generation of people who weren’t even born when it was written or performed for the first time, is because it makes them laugh.

And his advice to anyone who hasn’t yet seen it is, to do so, “because it swings!”.

X Factor finalist and star of the stage version of The Rise and Fall of Little Voice, Diana Vickers, will star in the role of Janet Weiss, and Emmerdale actor Ben Freeman will play the role of Brad Majors.

S Club 7 star Paul Cattermole is cast in the dual role of Eddie and Dr Scott. And following his success in over 900 performances of the 40th anniversary global tour of The Rocky Horror Show, Kristian Lavercombe returns as Riff Raff.

The show is on at the Waterside at 8pm from Monday April 18 through to Thursday 21, and at 5.30pm and 8.30pm on Friday 22 and Saturday 23. Tickets cost from £14 and are available from the box office 0844 871 7607.
