Nick Clegg had already been confirmed as speaking in favour or remaining in the EU at the debate on June 2.

He will be supported by TV presenter and columnist for The Independent, Steve Richards.

But it has now been confirmed that fighting for Brexit will be Mr Hitchens and Mr Hannan.

Mr Hitchens has published six books, including The Abolition of Britain, The Rage Against God and The War We Never Fought. He is a critic of political correctness, and describes himself as a ‘theist and Burkean conservative’.

But he is best known for his Mail on Sunday column, having previously worked as a foreign correspondent in Moscow and Washington.

Mr Hannan has been Tory MEP for the south east since 1999 and he is secretary general of the Alliance of European Conservatives and Reformists.

On his website, he is described as someone who ‘loves Europe’ but he believes the EU is ‘making its member countries poorer, less democratic and less free’.

MP for Buckingham and Commons Speaker John Bercow will chair the event at a yet-to-be announced constituency location.

Mr Bercow has said the debate on June 2 will be non-party political, and will focus on how an in-or-out vote would affect local people.

The event is for the benefit of his Buckingham constituency residents and will be an opportunity to get a handle on the issue before you vote on June 23.

Demand for the debate has been massively oversubscribed and was decided by ballot.
