New buses for cost effective rural service

PUBLIC TRANSPORT: New fuel efficient mini-buses which will be used for the County Connect, on demand bus service, will go on show next week.

In the six months since it came into operation a total of 1,300 people have signed up for the Northants County Council subsidised service which offers daily buses on flexible routes using towns like Brackley and Towcester as a hub.

Andre Gonzalez De Savage, NCC’s cabinet member for infrastructure said they were forced to replace normal bus services with the cost efficient on-demand system, and with 4,000 journeys made each month the decision had been justified.

He said: “The need to save millions of pounds meant that we needed to rethink the way we provided subsidised public transport. So far, County Connect has proved to be a tremendous success as the user figures demonstrate and demand can only increase as people become more aware of what the service has to offer.”

The new buses have a fuel efficiency of 20mpg. Passengers can phone, text, or book a seat online, for buses which meet them at their nearest village bus stop. Call 0845 456 4474 or log on to
