Not so lucky black cats being shunned by potential adopters

RSPCA branches in Buckinghamshire have been inundated with the friendly felines, and are struggling to rehome them because people think they are boring, too easily camouflaged or spooky.

And now cat bosses say that the potential pets are being overlooked in favour of gingers, torties or tabbies, simply because there are so many of them.

Britta Lams, cat coordinator at the RSPCA’s South Buckinghamshire branch, said: “Sadly we find that a lot of people now seek to adopt unusual coloured cats, ideally grey, ginger or tabby.

“But all of our black and black and white cats have super personalities and would make the perfect addition to any family.”

Abigail Moon, rehoming operations manager for the RSPCA, said: “The RSPCA rehoming teams have heard all kinds of excuses about why they don’t want a black cat, from ‘it’s too scary for my daughter’, to ‘we won’t be able to see him in the garden’.”

She added: “We would urge people to never judge a cat by its colour, but instead look at its personality first.”
