Ghislaine Maxwell, a socialite and campaigner was a long time associate and former girlfriend of the late disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Epstein died in prison in July last year where he was on remand over six charges relating to sex trafficking, and conspiracy to sex traffic minors.

The FBI believes that Ms Maxwell was involved in procuring young girls for Epstein to abuse, and in some cases abused them herself. The charges relate to alleged incidents in the 1990s.

Robert Maxwell was a prominent and flamboyant MP and media tycoon, and owned among others the Mirror Group of newspapers.

He became Labour MP for Buckingham in 1964 and won his seat again in 1966, finally losing it to the Conservatives in 1970.

He was also chairman of Oxford United and is credited with saving the club from bankruptcy.

Robert Maxwell died in 1991 after going missing from his yacht the Lady Ghislaine.

After his death it became clear that he had used hundreds of millions of pounds from his companies' pension funds to shore up the shares of the Mirror Group, plunging hundreds of staff pensions into doubt.

Many workers lost money as a result.
