Fears over safety at danger junction

Families are up in arms after a road closure to help the council build new offices means they must use a ‘dangerous’ junction instead.

Northampton Road shuts for half term week in February as part of the Moat Lane Regeneration Project - which includes new offices for South Northants Council (SNC).

But families living on The Shires in Towcester are worried about having to cross the busy A43 as part of the diversion.

Towcester Town Councillor David Tarbun, who lives on the estate, said: “That A43 junction is dangerous and I would not feel happy at all with my wife or myself driving my young daughter over that junction.

“I am all for the improvements to the crossroads, but the proposed closure seems excessive and dangerous.

The work, which takes place from February 16 to 21, will widen the road and modify its junction with the A5 by introducing a new right-hand turn lane.

Contractors are also planning to replace a blocked drain on the road.

But people living on the estate have taken to the SNC Facebook page to voice their anger and challenge the council to rethink the plans.

Debbie Edmonds said she avoids the A43 ‘at all costs’ while Daniel Partridge said the closure ‘cannot be allowed to happen’.

A spokesman for SNC said every effort was being made to ensure the works were carried out as ‘quickly and safely as possible’.
