Work begins on big new community centre in Aylesbury which will boast tennis courts, an all-weather pitch and allotments

This long-awaited community facility will offer a variety of spaces for hire, including large and small halls, meeting rooms and outdoor space, ideal for parties.

It will cater for small meetings and for events with up to 200 guests, offering a much-needed, quality facility for the Berryfields community, local groups, classes, music and other events, families and businesses to meet.

The courtyard will increase the space for weddings and other summer events with a full catering kitchen, and a small kitchen and servery accessed from the small hall.

Development of the Parish Council’s land at Roman Park commenced during 2016 with the creation of 52 allotments.

Big Top Nursery opened in December 2020. A cycleway now runs through the centre of the park which will be bordered by Versailles boxes containing mature trees, joining the Greenway from Waddesdon, via the station car park, eventually offering a safe cycle route to Aylesbury.

A gazebo is in place, offering an outdoor place to meet for the community.

Berryfields Buddies, a project to help combat loneliness, and the Berryfields Community Larder are based at Roman Park.

A community orchard was planted earlier this year along with an ‘edible’ hedge along the railway line fence and these will soon be producing fruit for walkers to enjoy. The children’s playground at the southern end of the park is much enjoyed and includes trampoline and small zip wire for younger children.

Tennis courts, an all-weather playing surface, kiosk and office/equipment store will follow along with a Roman Road replica, extensive tree planting and running track. The fully accessible viewing mound will take advantage of the views of the hilltop villages of Pitchcott, Oving, Whitchurch and Hardwick

to the east and Waddesdon Manor to the north of Berryfields.

Councillor James Inch, Chair of Berryfields Parish Council said: “Already enjoyed by many Berryfields residents, Roman Park is set to become a heritage park offering much for all visitors. Blackwood Architect’s design reflects the surrounding farmland and buildings.

"Focus Construction are committed to delivering the highest quality building and have worked with the Parish Council to ensure the project will be delivered to budget and on time”.

Building of the hall is expected to be completed during spring 2022.
