Post office payment possibility for council tax

PEOPLE in Aylesbury Vale who like to pay their council tax bills in cash will be able to do so at any post office or PayPoint location from later next year, if a proposal under discussion goes ahead.

Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC) cabinet is set to consider the proposal on Tuesday. If approved, it will mean customers paying cash will have a choice of 63 locations where they can do so, instead of the current three.

However, the existing cash office services in Buckingham, Winslow and Aylesbury, would no longer be available.

Closing the Aylesbury cash office would save about £50,000 a year.

In Buckingham and Winslow, the service is provided by customer service staff as part of their day-to-day duties.

Cabinet member for community matters Pam Pearce said: “We believe that by making these changes, it will be more convenient for people to pay their bills, as many shops with PayPoint facilities are open at weekends and in the evenings. It will also go some way to support our local shops and businesses, particularly those in rural areas. The council tax payer will benefit in the longer term through the reduced costs to the council of providing the service.”
