Prof Anthony Glees, who heads the University of Buckingham’s Centre for Security and Intelligence Studies, was called a ‘halfwit’, an ‘idiot’ and a ‘so-called professor’ by MP for Bradford George Galloway. The pair were debating British intervention in Iraq on BBC Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show.

Prof Glees told the Advertiser: “If I didn’t know that George Galloway didn’t drink, I would have thought he was drunk.

“I found the way he shouted at me was extremely offensive.

“There was a very sinister side to what he was doing. He was behaving in a way that somebody like me associates with facism.

“He didn’t want to disagree, he wanted to shout me down.

“He represents a party called Respect but the one thing he didn’t do was respect someone who held a view different to his own.

“I believe in free speech and in denigrating the University of Buckingham he was denigrating a university dedicated to free speech.”
