A Bucks-based charity that works with cats and dogs to combat loneliness in the community and low self-esteem in schoolchildren is asking people to help it raise money, by doing their normal shopping through a website that helps them donate as they spend.
Pets As Therapy (PAT) has been providing therapeutic visits to people in need since 1983.
Thanks to a committed team of volunteers, there are currently 5,000 dogs and over 200 cats helping vulnerable people in hospitals, hospices, special needs schools and care homes all over the UK.
Every week the calm, friendly dogs and cats give more than 130,000 people, both young and old, the chance to cuddle and talk to them, visiting half a million bedsides each year.
The charity also offers a unique service to children in schools who lack confidence with their reading.
The scheme allows them to read a storybook to a PAT dog, without feeling judged on their performance.
This educational venture has proved incredibly successful, with about 6,000 children now reading to dogs every week across the UK.
The charity relies heavily on donations to keep it up and running.
To help its fundraising mission, the charity is now registered on easyfundraising.org.uk – a free service which helps small causes to reach their cash objectives.
People who want to donate can choose to do their everyday shopping via the website. After purchasing, the retailer will give cash rewards that can be turned into a donation.
