Arachnophobes should be prepared for a bit of a fright when getting their fuel over the next couple of weeks.
The BP Garage, on Stratford Road, in Buckingham, has a spider infestation, making filling up the car a real scream for those frightened of spiders.
The warm weather has led to the spiders moving in above the fuel pumps where they can be sure of a regular meal of insects attracted to the garage by the lights.
Self-confessed arachnophobe and store manager, Tom Lumb told the Advertiser the spiders’ presence had caused some alarm for customers.
He said: “They cause a real problem. They leave a mess everywhere as their droppings end up on the petrol pumps.
“We’ve had the public taking pictures of the spiders too. The spiders started moving in at the beginning of June, but it has really ramped up recently.
“We’ve had a pest control company come round to confirm there are no false widows.
“Every so often, you hear a customer scream.”
He added the spiders were resistant to pesticides, but BP would be sending people around with jet washers to clear away the arachnids over the next couple of weeks.
