A nine-year-old will soon take to the stage as Annie after being cherry-picked from hundreds of budding young performers.

Cerys Price, who lives in Hillesden hamlet, has performed as Gretl in The Sound Of Music and as Molly in a previous production of Annie.

But in just three weeks she will play the title role at The Waterside in Aylesbury and her mum Heidi said it was a special moment when they found out.

She said: “Cerys opened up the letter in the kitchen and she said, ‘I’ll stand at one end of the room and you stand at the other’.

“Then she read out, ‘We would like to offer you the title role’ and I could hear her little mind working.

“She asked, ‘Does that mean they want to offer me the Annie part?’

“There was lots of shouting and jumping up and down. My ears have only just recovered. But it’s lots of hard work and we’re very pleased for her.”

Cerys has weekly classes at the Juliet Ratnage School of Performing Arts and also does Irish dancing.

But she said her classmates at Roundwood Primary School, Gawcott, are over the moon for her and have been helping her learn her lines.

Cerys said: “When I told them, they were really excited for me. Lots of them have got tickets for the shows and my friend Harriet is coming with her whole family.”

Her dad Stephen, who runs a cattery at their home, said he had been quietly confident that Cerys would stand out from the 600 girls who auditioned.

He said: “You just sometimes have a good feeling about it.

“And a neighbour actually went to see Annie a while ago and said to me the part would be perfect for Cerys.”

She is one of two Annies at The Waterside shows which run from June 26 to 28.

But Cerys, who sings Maybe and Tomorrow as solos for the show, will play the lead role on June 27 and for the matinee on June 28.

Cerys said: “You do get a bit nervous when you’re about to sing but I do my best and that’s all you can do.”
