Complete coverage by superfast broadband is almost a reality after further funding.

South Northants Council (SNC) has signed up to help fund phase two of the Superfast Northamptonshire Project to the tune of £250,000, up to 2017.

Northants County Council, which is managing the project, has already received a contribution of £5.5m from the government’s Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) fund and has agreed to match fund SNC’s contribution and where additional funds are available invest twice the sum.

South Northants has twice the national average levels of home working and self employment. The government aims to increase superfast broadband coverage across the UK to 95 per cent by 2017.

Mary Clarke, leader of SNC, said: “This latest stage of the Superfast Broadband Project is part of the council’s overall strategy to ensure the district continues to be one of the best places to live, work or build a business in the UK.

“In forging this agreement with NCC, we have ensured the focus in south Northants will be on connecting the district’s business parks to superfast broadband, as well as reaching the more rural communities to maximise coverage.”

The next step will see NCC working with BDUK on a procurement programme, before plans on how the superfast broadband infrastructure will be extended are published in the autumn.
