The boss of a removals firm based in Towcester, who took thousands of pounds off customers and then failed to turn up on the day they moved home, has been locked up for 18 months at Northampton Crown Court.

Jeffrey Hayward, aged 35, of Rugby, admitted participating in a fraudulent business which saw 23 customers pay a total of £16,392 in deposits for them to help move house.

But during a prosecution case the court was told Hayward used a string of excuses, including his son being in intensive care and his daughter being knocked down by a car.

Sentencing him on Monday, July 15, Judge Lynn Tayton QC said: “It is often said that moving house is one of the most stressful things anybody can go through in their lives and to find on the day of moving they did not have a removal man, one can only imagine that would have had a significant effect on these people, and of course there is the knock-on effect that when people move house they are part of a chain of people who would have been affected as well.”
