Next week’s opening of the region’s newest college has been welcomed by district MP Andrea Leadsom.

From next Monday the Silverstone University Technical College will start teaching up to 576 14 to 19-year-olds in full-time courses which combine practical and academic studies.

The school is one of the 12 new UTCs opening across England this month, increasing the total number open to 17 with a further 27 in development. Silverstone UTC will specialise in high performance engineering and events management.

Employers are put in the driving seat so that students learn from a curriculum designed by experts in a field and are then supported through work placements and access to industry standard facilities and equipment.

In June Redbull Racing’s chief technical officer Adrian Newey become a patron of the UTC.

Mrs Leadsom said: “I am delighted that the Silverstone UTC has arrived in South Northants.

“A lot of people have worked incredibly hard to get this new school to this stage and they have done a fantastic job for the local community.

“UTCs give hardworking young people the chance to learn in more practical ways.

“As well as high quality teaching in academic and vocational subjects, all students learn practical skills, giving them the essential tools they will need in the workplace and to succeed in later life.”
