A car ‘parked’ in the River Great Ouse caused a ripple among students at Buckingham University on Wednesday.
The mature student driver had left the car at a car park at the University’s Hunter Green campus to make a phone call at around 8.50am, leaving her two female passengers inside.
The automatic BMW then rolled down the bank from the Island car park and into the river, forcing its occupants to scamble to safety.
University journalism lecturer Roger Perkins said some students had spotted the incident unfolding and ‘like true journalists’ had sprung into action to film the scene.
He said: “It was the talk of the University for the day.”
The two-year-old vehicle was recovered by a crane at around 6pm after two tow trucks had been unable to dislodge it from the river bed.
