Here's the weather you can expect in Aylesbury this week after wettest day for years

This year’s flaming June came to a dramatic end across the Vale last week. Friday was one of the wettest days recorded across the vale in recent years, with heavy and persistent rain producing rainfall totals widely between 40-50mm across the region.

Locally Tring saw as much as 70mm, causing one of the local brooks to burst its banks - the rainfall totals recorded on Friday are what we would normally see for the whole month of June on average!

Monday (today) is the annual summer solstice, in which we see our longest daylight hours due to the maximum tilt of the earth towards the sun. The summer solstice, is often seen on June 21 with the winter solstice occurring on the December 21 respectfully.

It may surprise you to learn however, that the solstice can actually occur between June 20 to 22, although it is very rare that it occurs on June 22. The last occasion was 1975 with the next not occurring till 2203.

June 21 additionally marks the start of the Astronomical Summer, which runs through until September 23, where the equinox occurs. The equinox being the time where we see equal length of daylight and night-time hours.

Whilst here in the UK we think of summer being between the June 1 and August 31, some countries such as the United States follow the astronomical cycle for their meteorological seasons.

So whilst summer has fizzled out for the time being, is it likely to return? Showery outbreaks of rain look likely at times through the rest of this week however, there are hints that conditions may settle down heading into July with a return to dry and perhaps sunny weather.
