Winslow mayor Llew Monger’s New Year message

It seems entirely appropriate the year of the Olympics will see the opening of two sporting activity facilities in Winslow.

The early spring will see completion of our multi use games area and by the autumn I hope we will have a fitness trail installed in the town.

I’m also looking forward to celebrating the Games when the Olympic Torch comes through Winslow on the morning of Monday, July 9. Of course, the other major celebratory event will be the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the town council will be supporting those celebrations. A permanent recognition of this will be the naming of the sports facility as the Jubilee Games Area.

Sadly, the coming year of celebration will be tarnished for many by the impact of ongoing recession and cuts to services.

Efforts will continue to save both the library and the youth club in Winslow but we may yet be faced with the impact of even more cuts to local services. Winslow is fortunate to have so many people who do voluntary community work but these difficult times will surely see the need for more.

With this in mind I urge you to make 2012 the year you become more active in your community.

Best wishes to you and yours for 2012.
