Three more young carers from Buckingham & Winslow Young Carers (YC2) have successfully completed their Young Leaders training.

Edan Farr, aged 15, Chad Newton, 14, and Hannah Walker, 14, were presented with their Young Leaders Awards by Lord Lieutenant of Bucks, Sir Henry Aubrey-Fletcher.

To achieve the awards, the youngsters had to complete two away weekends, where they took part in team building and initiative exercises, completing a first aid course and learning about all the elements required in organising an activity, including risk assessments and supervision.

They then had to organise and run an activity, using all they had learnt.

YC2 now operates a Young Leaders work experience scheme, where those who have previously qualified as Young Leaders help out at junior club evenings, supporting the adult volunteers and often running activities themselves.

Two of them have food safety certificates, so can prepare and serve refreshments and support cooking lessons. They are also a great asset when the group goes on trips.

As well as being ‘rewarded’ in gift vouchers each month, they are enhancing their CVs, which is important as young carers traditionally have lower educational and career prospects than their peers who don’t have caring responsibilities.

One of the club’s Young Leaders, Chloe McConnell, was chosen as Buckingham Young Citizen of the Year 2016.
