FOOTBALL: Brackley Town go into this weekend’s game at Frome Town on the crest of a wave after taking a maximum six points from their two Bank Holiday fixtures to retain second spot in the Evostik Southern League Premier Division, writes Sports Editor Mark Pendred.

Jefferson Louis grabbed a brace in a 2-0 home win over Evesham United on Monday, while Owen Story netted the only goal for Brackley in a 1-0 victory at Chippenham Town last Saturday.

Saints boss Jon Brady was delighted with his side’s wins as they bounced back from a 2-0 reverse at Arlesey Town the previous week- their only loss in six games.

He said: “We’ve started really well and the policy of rotating seven players up front from game to game is bringing plenty of goals, with Tom Winters playing better than ever.

“But we’re not getting carried away. There are a lot of tough tests to come, starting with Frome Town next Saturday, who are a very strong physical side.”

Against Evesham on Monday, Brackley struggled in the first 20 minutes as United took the game to them with surging runs down the wings and through the middle. Josh Quaynor and Marcus Palmer were constant threats and Brackley keeper Jon Bond made a number of saves.

Brackley’s first real chance came on 17 minutes when Winters ran into the Evesham box and set up Owen Story but he took his eye off the ball and missed his kick completely.

Slightly against the run of play, Louis broke the deadlock for Saints with goals on 35 and 36 minutes to put Brackley 2-0 up.

The first strike saw Louis rise to head home a lofted cross from Winters whose initial shot was blocked by keeper Ryan Robinson. Louis struck again a minute later with a solo effort from 18 yards. The half finished with Bond saving well from an Evesham attack and Winters going close the other end with a clever chip shot.

Brackley failed to add to their tally after the break but created chances and comfortably held the visitors. Michael Chennels, who was later replaced by Steve Diggin, almost scored from Winters’ cross and Simon Fitter headed off the line from a Winters’ shot.

Substitute Francis Green made a great run down the left wing with the 90 minutes almost up and Diggins’ header was scrambled to safety.

Diggin again came close with a header in injury time.

At Chippenham last Saturday, a tight game saw a goalless first half, with Owen Story netting for Brackley after 73 minutes to take the three points.

Brackley Town: Bond, Clifton, Myles, Palmer, Willmott, Magunda, Story, Solkhon (Green), Louis(Sandy) Chennels (Diggin), Winters.

Evesham United: Robinson, Fitter, Quaynor, Daniel, Jones (Blake), Luckett, Hyde, Walker (Dinsley), Palmer, Pountney (Durrell), Williams.

Saints will hope to keep their good run going when they travel to Premier Division newcomers Frome Town tomorrow, Saturday, kick-off 3pm.
