FOOTBALL: Brackley Town opened up a five-point lead at the top of the Southern League Premier Division with a 3-1 home win against Weymouth on Saturday.
Boss Jon Brady’s side will aim to keep up their good run at basement team Cirencester Town this Tuesday night (March 20), kick-off 7.45pm, before hosting Chippenham Town at the weekend.
Against Weymouth, Brackley took a narrow lead from a scrappy first half and two goals from Steve Diggin early in the second saw them home.
On 18 minutes Glenn Walker on the right found Elliot Sandy in the box whose fine control created space and a neat finish to give Saints the lead.
Play was halted for injuries to twin centre-backs Ben Gerring and Sam Poole, who clashed heads at a corner on 27 minutes and were both unable to continue. Saints struggled to regain the upper hand following the injury break before reasserting control as the interval neared.
On 40 minutes Walker required treatment when he tangled with the netting in the goalmouth as his close range effort struck the bar and then Saints keeper Billy Turley and Weymouth captain Warren Byerley collided as Turley punched clear just before the break providing a further stoppage.
Brackley finished the half on top and maintained their impetus with a superb goal minutes after the re-start as fine play by winger Owen Story set up Diggin who finished clinically. On 51 minutes a defensive mix up led to keeper Tom Manley dragging down substitute Marvin Robinson and Diggin coolly converted the penalty to give Saints a 3-0 margin.
Brackley had chances to increase the lead but it was the visitors who fought back with Byerley always a threat and it was the captain who bagged a consolation goal with five minutes remaining taking full advantage of sloppy defending.
This was nevertheless a convincing victory that extends Saints run of home wins to four.
