Brackley youngster impresses despite frustrations

Brackley’s Ryan Harper-Ellam savoured his first experience at Brands Hatch as the keen racer competed in rounds three and four of the BRSCC Formula Jedi Championship.

Due to school exams, Ryan had to train on the stimulator at Izone Driver Performance in preparation for the event.

Saturday’s qualifying put the 16-year-old 13th on the grid after a quick lap was hindered by rain, but a quick start saw the youngster gain four places before he was forced wide and pushed back down again, eventually finishing 11th, just 0.028 of a second from 10th.

Sunday promised much after the youngster improved by two seconds to qualify sixth, less than half a second off pole.

Ryan made a strong start to the race and maintained his place in the leading pack up until lap 11, but his good work was undone in unfortunate circumstances that saw him end up beached in the gravel, taking away a possible fourth place in just his third race.

He said afterwards: “It was a disappointing end to a fantastic race, but my first experience of Brands Hatch was brilliant and I have come away knowing I am much closer to the pace of the front runners which has given me lot of confidence heading into Snetterton in a few weeks.”
