Buckingham Colts see off ON rivals in Oceanic Cup

YOUTH RUGBY: In the first round of the Oceanic Cup, Buckingham Colts ran out 12-7 winners over East Midlands league leaders and competition favourites, Old Northamptonians.

In their early season league encounter the well-drilled ON’s side scored a very credible 50 points against Buckingham with a solitary consolation try in reply. On this occasion ON’s showed how over-confidence can turn to complacency while Buckingham demonstrated maturity and dogged determination, and weren’t to be beaten.

From the kick-off Buckingham’s pack tore into the opposition causing ON’s to struggle to find any structure in their game. Some exceptional tackling and committed rucking caused several turnovers keeping ON’s pinned back in their half.

As pressure mounted, ON’s gave away a succession of penalties. Sam Dickson stepped up and slotted four out five kicks to give the home side a 12-0 lead at half time.

In the second half Buckingham played into the wind but both Adam Clarke and Tom Warren kicked cleverly to take the pressure off, but late in the second half they strung together a strong passage of play and scored in the corner.

With 10 minutes to go Buckingham’s defence and discipline held firm and the Green & Whites deservedly came away as winners. In the next round they face Old Scouts.
