A late batting flurry from Adam Beckett and Dan Archer was not enough to stop Syresham falling to a six-wicket defeat against Byfield in the final of the Wardington Cup.

Syresham crashed to 29-5 batting first but Beckett (35) and Archer (17) put on 63 to take their side up to 92-5.

In reply, opener Duncan Harris made 35 as Byfield comfortably chased the target down inside 17 overs.

Harris also shone in Byfield’s league encounter at the weekend, scoring an imperious 138 to help his side to a 102-run win at Castlethorpe. Byfield are 28 points clear in the Premier Division.

Meanwhile, Anthony Romaine’s superb 112 not out saw Evenley to a five-wicket win at Syresham. Romaine also impressed with the ball, taking 4-53.

Further down the table, Thornborough remain bottom after a 123-run defeat against Wroxton.

The top of Division One is much tighter with just 33 points separating the top eight. Greens Norton are currently leading the way following a nervy one-wicket in at home to Woodford Halse.

Andrew Blundell took 3-22 in Woodford’s 117 before Matt Yuill scored a vital 49 as Norton crept over the winning line.

Charlton are still in the title hunt thanks to a four-run win at Hinton-in-the-Hedges – Ryan Knight scored 91 and took 4-29.

However, Evenley A succumbed to a 64-run loss at the hands of the now second-placed Afro Caribbean. Charlie Thomas scored 49 for Evenley but Melvin John’s 3-17 knocked Evenley over for 132 in reply to Caribbean’s 196-9.

In Division Two, Croughton earned a thrilling two-run win against leaders MK Air after a nervous finish. Chasing Croughton’s 168-8 to win, MK Air came up just two runs short, finishing on 166-7.

The result means Croughton are 22 points adrift of the leaders but have two games in hand.

King’s Sutton continue their stroll to the Division Three title, courtesy of a five-wicket victory at Gawcott & Hillesden. Colin Piggott (4-40) and Ryan Omar (5-18) were the pick of the bowlers.

Gayton are second despite a comprehensive defeat to Priors, while bottom of the table Syresham A were beaten by seven wickets at Bodicote.

In Division Four, leaders Towcestrians enjoyed a comfortable 105-run win against Willoughby to extend their lead to 82 points over second-placed Helmdon, who lost by three wickets at home to Dunchurch & Bilton A.

Finally, Flecknoe continue to lead Division Five with Hinton-in-the-Hedges A second after Evenley B failed to raise a side.

Thornborough are fifth in the table following a 52-run over Brackley as Ben Oxley (3-3) and Euan Davies (3-25) bowled the visitors out for 104 when chasing Thornborough’s 156 all out.
