Brackley Town will need a replay at Barrow AFC on Tuesday evening to reach the first round proper of the FA Cup after a dour 0-0 draw at St James’ Park on Saturday.
Long-range attempts dominated a lacklustre and scrappy match as neither side created a single clear-cut chance, with a goalless draw a fair outcome. The replay will take place at Barrow at 19:45 on Tuesday.
Dan Preston put a free header wide in the first minute as Barrow showed early intent but Saints gradually got on top, with Gary Mulligan’s shot deflecting narrowly over.
A tight opening made way for a more frenetic period of play that saw action at either end with both goalkeepers having to be alert to keep out long-range efforts, but despite their endeavour, Saints failed to pose much of a threat on the visitors goal.
The home side dominated possession and again went close through Mulligan’s header but neither side could create any clear-cut chances in a scrappy first half that was dominated by longe-range shots - the best of those coming from Barrow’s Richard Davies, whose 30-yard volley had to be tipped wide by Turley.
A below-par Saints struggled to impose themselves on the game with Barrow looking comfortable heading into the break goalless.
Brackley started the second half in more positive fashion, getting behind the visiting defence on a couple of occasions but an end product continued to elude them.
Barrow responded with three successive corners, the last of which whizzed across the face of the home goal and wide, before Brackley themselves went close from a corner as Ryan Austin headed wide.
Quick feet from Diggin then allowed him to get away from two Barrow defenders on the left and whip in a dangerous cross that narrowly evaded Mulligan as the second half, like the first, was plagued with mistakes and half chances.
Following another scrappy period of play, Turley was forced into a fine low save to deny 19-year-old Nicky Walker’s decent effort before the same man threatened again with another long-range shot as the game entered the closing stages.
Sam Sheridan also forced Turley into a save as Barrow looked the more likely to snatch victory - but the home side held out to force a replay.
