BRACKLEY Town picked up their first bit of silverware of the season after securing the Maunsell Cup, courtesy of a 3-0 victory over a youthful Peterborough United XI.

The visitors rarely looked threatening throughout and gave Town goalkeeper Chris Zyricki little trouble as Brackley won the competition for the second year running.

Stephen Diggin opened the scoring early on with a
well-struck free-kick that gave United ‘keeper Alex Lynch little chance.

The impressive Gary Mulligan doubled the lead on 22 minutes when he slid the ball into an open goal following a powerful run by Diggin.

Brackley remained in control after the break with Elliot Sandy missing a one-on-one chance.

However, the tall striker made up for his miss when his well-placed header from Will Green’s inch-perfect cross found the back of the net.

Town saw out the victory with little trouble and were well worth their 3-0 victory with debutant Michael Corcoran particularly impressive as he and
Brett Solkhon controlled the midfield.

Barry Quinn collected the trophy to get Saints’ pre-season off to the perfect start.

Meanwhile, Brackley have also confirmed an extra
pre-season match with Blue Square Premier outfit Luton Town.

The match will take place at St James’ Park next Wednesday, August 1, kicking off at

Luton town assistant manager, Alan Neilson said ahead of the game: “Myself and the gaffer know Jon Brady, they’ve got promotion into Conference North now, they’re a decent side and he’s looking to get good players.

“We went there last season, it’s a good pitch, so it’s a good game to go and play.”
