A busy week for Buckingham Athletic saw them play four times in seven days with a win and three defeats to show for their efforts.
Last Thursday, Athletic played SSML Division One league leaders Hoddesdon Town and were desperately unlucky to lose 1-0 following a 95th minute goal after Sam Hodges had hit the bar in the 80th minute for Buckingham.
Next up for Athletic was Southall on Saturday and again they were unfortunate to lose as they paid for missing chances when Southall scored the only goal of the game midway through the second half.
However, Buckingham’s fortunes improved on Tuesday evening when Phil Martin scored three goals in a 5-1 win against rivals Stony Stratford.
The hosts settled the quicker of the two teams and took the lead with a well-worked goal that saw Adam Bone’s neat touch allow Martin to break free and chip the ball over the goalkeeper.
Adam Richmond doubled the lead at half time before Martin completed his hat-trick with two goals in five minutes to take his tally to 31 for the season and all but seal the victory.
Stony pulled one back but Adam Bone completed the scoring when he struck his free-kick into the top corner.
On Thursday, though, Athletic suffered a 3-0 defeat to Bedford, a result that sees them remain 11th in SSML Division One.
