John Mullholland was delighted to chalk up his first win as Winslow United manager at the weekend when they beat Codicote 3-2 in SSML Division One, lifting them up a place to 16th.
A superb debut from Ellis Hercules was capped with a brace of goals, first heading home a free-kick and then finding the top corner, as Winslow led 2-0 before Charlie Flanagan’s free-kick capped a terrific win.
Afterwards, Mullholland said: “I’m extremely pleased to grab our first win as manager.
“I was glad it came as we deserved it and although the score doesn’t show, it was a comfortable three points and the score line flattered Codicote because we should have had three or four more.
“We went to a 4-5-1 with the two wide men pushing forward with Leo Brooks sitting deep in the midfield. It really worked for us and Codicote weren’t able to get a hold of the ball and play and we took advantage and got a comfortable lead in the first half.
“The second half was a closer affair early on and Codicote pushed for a goal back and it came through some sloppy team defending which allowed them an easy shot on the edge of the box.
“Fortunately we managed to get a two goal lead again from free kick that went straight in from wide of the 18-yard box which caused their keeper all sorts of problems and flew straight over him into the net.
“The lads really impressed me Saturday and it was nice to finally get our first three points under me and it was thoroughly deserved, the boys were excellent.”
