Robins off the bottom with overdue win

A FIRST win since September 1 saw Buckingham Town climb off the bottom of the UCL Division One table as they defeated Wellingborough Whitworth 5-3 at Manor Fields.

It looked like another afternoon of woe for Buckingham when Cavell Jarvis gave the Flourmen a third minute lead.

But – instead of capitulating like so many times this season – the Robins responded impressively and levelled through Deamarlo Smith’s left-footed drive before Carl Knox headed in Ben Shepherd’s cross on the stroke of half time to give Buckingham a lead at the break.

With confidence flooding back, the hosts made it 3-1 shortly after the restart as Smith raced clear to score before Jarvis pulled one back for Wellingborough.

Once again Buckingham responded when Drew Mitten chipped the goalkeeper and he made sure of the win 14 minutes from time with a second goal despite Luke Raftery’s strike for Wellingborough.

Knox ended the game in goal for Buckingham after a late flare up saw Matt Bines and two Whitworth men receive their marching orders.

Buckingham: Matt Bines, Matt France, Sam Barker, Pat Diamond, Lewis Hayes, Kyle Stimpson, Nick Bines (Jason Gardiner), Carl Knox, Drew Mitten (Corey Ringer), Ben Shepherd (Chris Robson), Demarlo Smith.
