Saints stop the rot

A TOM Winters double helped Brackley Town make an impressive return to winning ways as they eased past Droylsden 3-0 at the Butcher Arm’s Ground.

Following a recent poor run – no win in five games – Saints were back to somewhere near their best in a dominant performance.

The three points were already wrapped up with barely 30 minutes on the clock during a compelling first half performance that brought an unassailable three-goal lead

The home side rallied after the break and managed to prevent any further damage but Brackley had already completed the job to take the three points and remain third in the Blue Square North.

The starting line-up featured the surprise return of Jefferson Louis partnering Steve Diggin in attack, Billy Turley in goal and Glenn Walker back after illness.

Louis was immediately into the fray with two early attempts on goal before Tom Winters struck twice, firing clinically past keeper Dale Latham for a 2-0 lead within just 21 minutes.

Winters cut inside from the wing beating two defenders before finding the corner for the first.

The second was created by Diggin’s delightful header into Winters’ path and his lightening quick pace took him in on goal and he made no mistake.

The Bloods afforded the visitors ample space and time and on 28 minutes Louis’ close control in the danger area extended the lead further.

Droylsden came close with a foray on the right that saw Turley keep out James Ellison’s goal-bound effort only with the assistance of his post but threats on the Brackley goal were rare.

The second half had chances for both sides but neither could add to the goals tally.

It was a strong all-round team performance by Saints and they overwhelmed The Bloods with Brett Solkhon and Eddie Odhiambo again dominant in midfield and the defence imperious with right-back James Clifton nominated as Man of the Match by the home supporters.

Buoyed by the win, Saints now enter a tough period of games starting with the visit of Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday.
