Winslow foil Bedford before suffering worst defeat of the season

Bedford’s title chances were dealt a blow by a tenacious Winslow United display at Elmfields Gate on Saturday.

The visitors came into the game needing three points to maintain their promotion push and they were in the ascendancy for most of the first half with Winslow reduced to 10 men after a debatable red card for United skipper Vinny Shrieves.

For all of Bedford’s pressure, they failed to seriously test Owusu Boateng in the Winslow goal as the back four, marshalled by the experienced Derek Brown, dealt with the threat.

The second half continued in the same uneventful vein before Bedford took the lead when a long throw into the penalty area was scrambled into the net.

However, United grabbed an equaliser on 65 minutes when Jakub Kaspryzk broke through two challenges before firing a superb 25-yard effort into the corner.

The 10 men continued to push forward and Claude Seanla’s fine run and cross almost picked out Rob MacDonald but his header flew wide as the game ended level.

Following that impressive result, United then suffered their heaviest defeat of the season when they were beaten 4-1 at home to Codicote on Tuesday. This weekend United travel to rivals Buckingham Athletic.
