Ladies put up brave fight

Rothwell Youth 6

Brackley Sports Ladies 1

It was a tale of two halves on Sunday as Sports Ladies crashed to their fourth straight defeat against Rothwell Youth in the Northants Womens League Division One.

Sports were keen to bounce back from the poor performance of seven days previously and this showed from the start as they dominated the first twenty minutes with a great display of passing football with only the end product denying them a deserved lead.

Rothwell began to get into the game more but Sports kept them at bay the majority of the time. Despite the dominance though, it was Rothwell who went into the interval ahead, a well taken breakaway attack giving them a slender lead on 32 minutes.

After half time and with Sports playing up the slope, it was a different story as Rothwell began to have the upper hand, doubling their lead within five minutes of the restart.

It was three on the hour, in controversial circumstances. Sports keeper Jackie Cunningham was brought down in the box and while Rothwell played on, Hollie Williams handled the ball on the line, denying them a third.

However, after consultation with players from both sides, Williams was repreieved from the obligatory red card by the referee with a goal awarded instead.

The lengthy delay in making this decision seemed to knock the momentum out of Sports with Rothwell scoring another two quick goals to give them a somewhat flattering scoreline. Sports continued to battle on, playing some good passing football as they looked to get some kind of reward for their hard work as tired legs set in. It finally came on eighty minutes when Zoe Cox found Kelly Harry who placed the ball home for her 17th of the season. Rothwell added a sixth with two minutes to go.This Sunday, Sports Ladies host Kingsthorpe Jaguars at Brackley Leisure Centre, kick-off 2pm.
