FOOTBALL: Brackley-based Magdalen College School edged Bicester Community College 2-1 in the final of the Gold Cup, the Banbury District Schools Cup for boys in Year 11 at St James Park, home of Brackley Town FC.
In a tense and goalless first half, chances were at a premium, Bicester’s best effort coming when they struck the bar with a great header from a corner.Shortly after Magdalen almost broke the deadlock when Matt Hammond’s shot beat the keeper but went narrowly over the goal.
After the break Magdalen took the lead when Jordan Gardner finished from close range.
Bicester fought back and after a couple of half chances forced the equaliser. A looping header was tipped onto the bar by Jake Butler only for the rebound to be rammed into the net. In a final attack Magdalen won a corner. As the ball came into the box Hammond rose highest and planted a header firmly into the roof of the net to seal his side’s victory.
