Juniors Evan Bett and Gus Davidson are into the second round of the Southern Region Matchplay Championship after beating Harleyford Golf Club on the second extra hole.

The two Buckingham Golf Club members went two-down at home but recovered to make it all square on the 18th hole at Harleyford before Davidson sunk the winning putt to take Buckingham through.

Meanwhile, a field of 35 ladies turned out in a medal competition for the Loftus Cup with Diane Hofman taking the honours after shooting a nett 68, two better than runner-up Rhona Sayer, while Carole Flello edged out Lynda Riecken for third place on countback.

Eighty-five men contested the June midweek medal and Peter Ambrose topped the pile with a brilliant nett 65, two strokes clear of Andy Ballard, Ian Ream and Bill McNicholl.

In the RNLI Spoon, Wilf Hearne led the way as he recorded the lowest gross score on the day of 74, which was one stroke ahead of Alan Hall and Rob Hind, who both hit a nett 68.
