An amateur golfing duo from Gawcott narrowly missed out in their attempt to win the prestigious mixed pairs title at the HowDidiDo National Matchplay Championship held in Portugal in February.
Elizabeth Harris-Ulph, a 24-handicapper, and husband Anthony Ulph, who plays off 16, played five rounds of matchplay golf to finish adrift of eventual winners Stephen Cammack and Susan Clark, from Clowne.
All was not lost though, as the pair – who are members at Buckingham Golf Club – enjoyed an expenses-paid trip to play at the world-class Quinta do Lago resort, on the Algarve, as reward for their efforts in battling their way through local rounds and a regional final during 2013, in a competition open to any golfer who is a member of an affiliated club with an officially recognised handicap.
They received complimentary return flights to Faro, six-nights’ accommodation at the four-star Monte da Quinta Club and five days of golf.
Elizabeth and Anthony were just two of 32 golfers from across the UK who received that reward after qualifying for the grand final, which featured four competitions: singles, pairs, mixed pairs and senior pairs, for those aged 50 or more.
