Towcester Ladies Hockey Club’s first team are up to fourth in Midlands League Division One following a 1-0 win over Cannock IIs.
Tows took a while to get used to the fast and bouncy Cannock pitch, but the visitors soon settled into the game and after an end-to-end first half, Laura Whittle’s superb strike gave Towcester a 1-0 half-time lead.
Tows clung onto their lead in the second period having withstood some heavy pressure from Cannock, who failed to capitalise on any of their nine short-corners, while the visitors looked dangerous on the break as Whittle again went close.
A second goal wasn’t required, though, as Towcester held on to the points. They are next in action at home to Loughborough Students IIs on November 8.
Towcester IIs also recorded a 1-0 victory as they beat Burton IIs.
Both sides were targeting their first win of the season but, despite chances at either end, the first half remained goalless.
The second half was an equally even affair but, with time running out, Tows made the crucial breakthrough when Leanne and Catherine combined to find Cheryl, who skilfully slid the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper for what proved to be the winner.
There is a league break this week before the IIs return to action away at Burton firsts on November 8 while Towcester IIIs face local rivals Kettering IIIs at Corby Academy.
