A depleted Towcestrians side suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend, going down 19-13 to Newbury Blues.

The home team were quick out of the blocks and controlled the opening exchanges, which culminated in a deserved try scored by flanker Josh Love.

The increasing penalty count against Tows allowed Newbury to continue their dominance and they went further ahead with a second try, this time from Fen Gallagher.

Gradually Tows came into the game and a kick to the corner from Ben Roe resulted in Dave Stocks piling over before a swift move allowed Adam Wilkinson to bring Tows to within two at half time.

An improved second half performance saw Tows go ahead thanks to a nerveless penalty from Roe and they appeared destined for the victory until the eighth minute of injury time when Newbury’s number eight gathered the ball and went rampaging downfield to score a last-gasp winning try.

Elsewhere, there were wins for Tows IIIs and the Colts but the IIs were beaten by Ampthill.
