Buckingham were ruthlessly dispatched 69-3 by runaway league leaders Chippenham at Maids Moreton.
Having seen fellow strugglers Bletchley lose 74-0 to the same opponents the previous week, Buckingham were under no illusions as to the task facing them. Having won all 15 matches prior to Saturday’s game, racking up a 12-point lead in the process, Chippenham appear title certainties already.
They started with a bang, gathering the Buckingham kick-off and spinning the ball along the threequarters to score inside a minute.
The home side came back well and made good ground before Chippenham were penalised for offside and Calum Gillie kicked the three points on eight minutes.
That was as close as Buckingham got as thereafter Chippenham were always in control. They secured their bonus point fourth try with just over 15 minutes played but were made until the stroke of half-time before they scored again as Buckingham refused to buckle.
The one-way traffic continued after the break with the Chippenham pack driving over for a converted try.
Though Buckingham rarely threatened to break the visitors’ territorial stranglehold, they never let their heads drop and provided some good passages of play, despite the dominant visitors running out comfortable winners in an 11-try romp.
This week, Buckingham face a crunch clash in their relegation battle when they travel to Devizes with the two teams level on points at the bottom of the table.
