Charlton suffered their first defeat of the season at the weekend when they were pipped by just two runs in a thrillingly tense encounter against Byfield in the latest round of South Northants Cricket League matches.

Charlton would have fancied their chances at the halfway stage when they bundled Byfield out for just 88 runs as Aza Shah (6-31) ran through the batsmen.

But Charlton came up agonisingly short in reply after four wickets apiece for Matthew Kirkham and Nathan Jones saw Byfield to the narrowest of wins.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division, Syresham succumbed to defeat against Warwick University Staff despite a fine all-round performance from Nathan Archer.

Archer took 3-53 with the ball and then made 53 with the bat but Warwick eased to victory by 67 runs.

Thornborough clinched their first home victory of the season when Nick Chapman (46) and Tom North (3-40) inspired them to a 19-run victory against Wroxton.

Middleton Cheney are the current Premier Division leaders after they beat Evenley by 79 runs.

In Division One, a magnificent spell of bowling from Jack Henn saw him lead Evenley A to an emphatic 112-run win over Castlethorpe.

Henn took 8-11 as Castlethorpe capitulated to 32 all out in reply to Evenley A’s 144-9.

Other results in that division saw leaders Woodford Halse (178-7) beat Byfield A (119), Bodicote (163-7) defeat Croughton (113-8), Dunchurch & Bilton (118) pip Willoughby (108) and MK Afro Caribbean (202-7) ease to victory over Radway (159).

Kings Sutton currently top the Division Two table following a one-sided victory against Greens Norton at the weekend.

Batting first, Ian Harris top scored with 63 as Sutton posted 162-8 before Ryan Omar picked up figures of 6-16 to dismiss Norton for a paltry 81.

Towcestrians are level on points with Sutton after they also won this week, with Andy Cater’s 5-14 leading them to a five-wicket victory over Middleton Cheney A.

In the same league, Silverstone (197-9) beat MK Air A (176-9).

In Division Three, Syresham A lead the way despite suffering a two-wicket defeat to Bodicote A. Jamie Leeson finished unbeaten on 86 as Syresham posted 177 but Bodicote squeezed home with two wickets to spare.

Elsewhere, Pete Brooks (4-27) and Colin Piggott (3-8) ran through Helmdon’s batting order to help Gawcott & Hillesden to a crushing 10-wicket victory.
