Towcester ladies first team put in a spirited display when they succumbed to a 3-1 defeat against league leaders and local rivals Northampton Saints.
Tows are currently sixth in Midlands Division One and faced a difficult task in the shape of Northampton, who have only lost once all season, but they made a positive start with Gemma English, Laura Whittle and Ella Bevan linking up well on the right while solid defending thwarted the visitors at the other end.
Towcester were unable to capitalise on their good early play, however, and Saints seized control with a well-taken first goal.
Home keeper Sue Willers then denied the visitors from a penalty flick, but Northampton doubled the lead moments later before making it 3-0 early in the second half.
Unfazed, Tows refused to give up and they were rewarded for their endeavour when Whittle scored a superb solo goal as she picked the ball up on the halfway line and weaved her way past several Saints players before firing home.
