Towcestrians began their 2015 South Northants Cricket League campaign with a resounding eight wicket win over Gawcott & Hillesden.

New Tows skipper Roger Wilson won the toss and put Gawcott into bat but the visiting bowlers struggled make any inroads in the early overs.

However, the introduction of Kevin Hawkins and Andrew Roberts stemmed the flow of runs before wickets began to tumble, with Hawkins picking up 2-35 and Roberts 4-17.

John Patterson (37) top scored for Gawcott while Bob Hutt made 27 but Tom Sheppard returned and picked up two late wickets as the hosts were bundled out for 124.

In reply, Rob Jones fell cheaply but Sheppard was in fine touch as he put on a 50 run stand for the third wicket with skipper Wilson before falling for a well-crafted 52.

With 41 still needed, Wilson (54no) was joined by James Greenaway-Rowe and the pair saw Tows home with ease, just two wickets down.

Speaking after the match, captain Wilson said: “Despite some wayward bowling at the start we managed to get on top of Gawcott with some tidy bowling and keen fielding, although 124 on a pitch as poor as that was probably 30 or so more than we would have liked to chase.

“That said, we made lighter work of the target than the pitch would have suggested.

“It’s a great start to the season with some notable performances. If we can maintain our consistency, availability and barring injuries, we will be pushing hard for promotion to Division Two.”

Elsewhere in Division Three, Syresham suffered an eight-wicket defeat in their opening match of the season against Helmdon.
