Towcestrians Rugby Club began their season in perfect fashion as they saw off Market Bosworth 54-22 in a thrilling match in Midlands One East.
Played on a sunlit evening, the match was watched by a good crowd celebrating the opening of the newly developed clubhouse.
All of the early pressure came from newly promoted Market Bosworth as their sizeable pack bossed the scrums and line-outs to give them a 7-0 lead after 10 minutes.
This spurred Tows’ scrum to show last season’s form by driving over from five metres giving Craig Holton a chance to touch down before Marc Yeates converted.
Tows then upped the pace and a devastating break from full back Charlie Barker then found scrum half Dave Stocks, which resulted in a magnificent try that Yeates again converted. Towcester’s running game began to gain a measure of control as the ball was spread wide to Holton, who scored his second try of the afternoon.
The half finished with a successful Bosworth penalty bringing the score to 19-10.
The second half started with a blistering try for Tows’ winger Adam Wilkinson before Bosworth hit back with a try of their own.
However, Tows immediately replied through Pepe Nanci as James Falvey converted.
It was all one-way traffic at that point as Chrissie George pounced on a loose ball and sprinted three quarters of the pitch to dive in under the posts.
Dave Williams, fresh from the bench, was next to go over as a mazy run allowed him to score under the posts.
Market Bosworth worked their line out drive again to reduce the deficit but again Towcester came straight back with Wilkinson scoring his second and Tows’ eighth try to seal a winning start to the season.
The IIs also enjoyed a good win as they beat Peterborough IIIs 48-3 after tries from Fen Gallagher, Luke Rust, Billy Jones, Ben Roe and two apiece from Matt Yuill and David Devlin-Jones.
