Towcestrians suffered just their third defeat of the season when they were beaten 8-5 away at Leighton Buzzard in a scrappy South West One Ease encounter that was dominated by the atrocious weather.
It was inevitable that this would be a tough and frustrating game of rugby as the rain lashed down, although things began promisingly for Towcester when they pushed a line-out drive over the line, with captain Liam Wilkinson touching down for the try.
However, playing down the slope in the first half, the visitors failed to capitalise on their territory as poor discipline allowed Buzzard to find some dangerous field positions.
Both sides seemed intent on spreading the ball wide but the slippery conditions made it difficult with Tows maintaining their 5-0 lead until half-time.
The second half was largely played in the middle of the field and for some time it was a stalemate, before the hosts then finally found their way to the try line, only for their conversion to hit the posts.
With Tows’ line-out struggling, opportunities went begging and towards the end of the game, Tom George received a yellow card and from in front of the posts, Buzzard kicked the resulting penalty to take the game in the closing stages.
Towcestrians remain second ahead of this week’s home game against Maidenhead.
Elsewhere, Tows IIs ran out 31-0 winners over Leighton IIs but the IIIs were beaten by Market Harborough.
