Wicken rider, Helen Newbold, took the 2013 South Essex Insurance Brokers (SEIB) Racehorse to Riding Horse Of The Year title riding Deep Reflection in fine style at Horse of the Year Shown (HOYS).

Deep Reflection, who finished as reserve champion in 2012, put in a near perfect performance this time, giving the ride judge, Jane Hubbard, a flawless ride.

Bred by Mrs C J C Bailey, the 13-year-old was trained by Martin Keighley and earned £25,000 in prize money with six wins and several places over hurdles and fences during his racing career. Helen’s husband, Jason, was assistant trainer to Ben Case, where Deep Reflection was in training before he went to trainer Martin Keighley, and Jason and Helen were delighted to take him on when he came out of racing.

Helen said: “He is a Diva at home. He was a show horse that went racing for too long. He loves it in the show ring.”

Helen and Jason run a pre-training and breaking yard in Wicken and Deep Reflection has to fit in with their busy lives. “He was easy to retrain, he carries himself naturally and is very low maintenance. I hardly have to work him in at a show,” she added.

The SEIB Racehorse to Riding Horse of the Year went forward to the Supreme Horse of the Year judging and Helen and Deep Reflection looked every inch a champion combination. A loose horse, caused after it’s saddle slipped during the final judging, could have created alarm, but Deep Reflection displayed his perfect manners and just stood and watched.
