Potton United 3
Buckingham Town 1
Despite having the lion’s share of the game, frustrated Town lost out at Potton on their return to action on Wednesday, with Graham Tibbals firing a treble for the home side.
Potton scored three times from four efforts on goal and had their keeper to thank for some outstanding saves.
Town in contrast hit the post three times, had several efforts cleared off the line and peppered the Potton goal, but only found the back of the net once.
Tibbals scored after 25 and 33 minutes, the first hotly disputed by Buckingham who thought it offside, as United led 2-0 at the break.
Jared Cunniff (pictured right) struck for the Robins to make it 2-1 just before the hour but Buckingham couldn’t find the equaliser.
Tibbals sealed victory in the 93rd minute to give the hosts three points and leave Buckingham still anchored in the basement spot of the United Counties Division One table. Potton are several places above them.
Ashley Brown, a new signing from Bugbrooke, made his debut at left back, while another new Robins recruit, Dan Renshaw, was unable to play due to illness. Former club player Joel McCormick is set to re-sign after spells elsewhere.
Robins’s boss Phil Simons said afterwards: “We created numerous chances and had about 25 attempts on goal, but despite all our good play only got on the scoresheet once. But their keeper was brilliant and denied us many times.
“Because we are creating chances, it gives us confidence we can bounce back in our next few games.”
