Strakka crash out at Silverstone

The Whittlebury-based Strakka Racing team endured a difficult opening race for the start of their 2013 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) assault when their HPD ARX-03a crashed out of the 6-Hours of Silverstone early in the race.

Despite this set-back, the team are now looking forward to this weekend’s 6-Hours of Spa-Francorchamps.

Thornborough’s Danny Watts, the team’s lead driver, said: “The track layout at Spa should suit our HPD ARX-03c down to the ground, so I’m confident we’ll have a good race weekend.

“The weather’s normally very changeable, and whilst the new car was very good straight out of the box in the dry, we’ve still got work to do to unlock its potential in the wet.

“Having the free practice sessions and qualifying in one day doesn’t really matter from a driver’s point of view because we just jump into the car and get on with it, but it will make it a very long day for the technicians and engineers.

“We’ll have to make sure we keep the car on the track and not sustain any damage because the timetable only allows for small changes to be done.

“Getting the maximum amount of track time will be vital, not just for Spa, but because the race is also an important part of our build up to Le Mans 24 Hours.”

The Spa-Francorchamps track measures 4.352 miles and twists and turns through the heavily wooded Ardennes forest.

The weather in the region is famed for playing its part, with many events held at the track suffering from wet weather or thick fog.

Watts added: “You just never know what the weather is going to throw at you at Spa – you just have to take it all in your stride.”

Strakka Racing is proud of their all-British driver line-up. Joining Watts in the HPD car will be Nick Leventis and Jonny Kane.

Leventis, the team owner, said: “There is a big hunger in the team to put our championship campaign back on track.

“It didn’t start the way we’d hoped for at Silverstone, but that doesn’t alter the ambition and drive everyone at Strakka Racing has to make this a truly great season for the team. We’re very optimistic heading to Spa.”

The Silverstone-based Delta-ADR team will also field two cars at Spa. The number 25 Delta-ADR Oreca 03-Nissan will be driven by Antonio Pizzonia, James Walker and Tor Graves, with the number 26 G-Drive Racing entry will again be raced by Roman Rusinov, Mike Conway and Silverstone’s John Martin.
