In a shock result Brackley Town crashed out of the FA Cup 2-0 in the first qualifying round at Thame United last Saturday.

Second half goals from Mitchell Meredith and Aaron Rogers sealed the win for the Hellenic League side, ranked two levels below Brackley.

A goalless first half saw Brackley unable to convert their chances as Thame keeper and former Buckingham Town player Nick Bennion saved well from Paul Dempsey and then Owen Story (pictured) within four minutes. A minute later and Michael Chennells set up Elliot Sandy whose header found the crossbar as the visitors threatened to overrun United.

The home side settled to their game and, as the half-time break neared, came close to finding the first goal themselves as manager’s son Dan West’s snapshot on 41 minutes was just over and giant centre-forward Alex Stewart showed a good touch to create space before shooting over.

The second half opened with Saints dominating possession, twice striking the woodwork from Joe Magunda’s effort and then captain Chris Willmott’s header direct from a corner. Again Thame weathered the storm and on 58 minutes substitute Matt Hall struck his free-kick against the Brackley post with debutant keeper Joe Murrell beaten. Within minutes Thame had earned a penalty for handball and the lead as left-back Mitchell Meredith blasted his penalty kick beyond Murrell.

Try as they might this was not to be Brackley’s day as efforts rained in on Thame’s goal and Bennion led a charmed life. Thame claimed a second goal deep into added time through Aaron Rogers to seal the win.
