Buckingham Town overcame a Cherwell League Representative XI by five wickets on Sunday.

After winning the toss and choosing to bat, the League XI made a brisk start as openers Doug Aris and Anton DeBeer put on 38 at a run-a-ball before Wayne Platts removed DeBeer.

Aris continued to score fluently, bringing up his 50 from 42 balls before his stay was ended by skipper James Gear, with Rowley also falling as the run-rate slowed.

Jason Ell followed up with two further wickets, including skipper Nick Pykett for 35. Steve Beck (27) and George Humphries (19no) pushed the score along and ensured the League XI batted out the 45 overs as they scored 189-9. Platts took 3-51 while Ell, Gear and Jack Parish all picked up two wickets.

Callum Price started the Buckingham reply quickly with 46 off 35 balls as he put on 68 with Ben Laycock for the first wicket.

It took a change of bowling to the spin of Matthew Johnson to remove Price and that led to a spell of four wickets for 29 runs as Buckingham slipped to 97-4.

Laycock held the innings together with a solid 53, but when he was dismissed, the score was 135-5 and almost identical to the position of the League XI at the same point in their innings.

However, Ben Stafford (32no) and Simon Myatt (38no from 23 balls) secured the win for Buckingham with an unbeaten partnership of 57 in eight overs.
