TWYFORD Cricket Club’s 1st XI kept their promotion ambitions well on course despite slipping into second place in Cherwell Cricket League Division Two after drawing at Aston Rowant.
Oxford are now top of the table, but only by a single point from Twyford with Challow & Childrey a further 16 points back.
Twyford’s decision to bat first against Aston appeared a bad one early on when they lost a wicket in the first over. But they were able to build around Stafford Sansome, whose well-crafted 70 allowed the visitors to reach 200 all out in the penultimate over.
Sansome was well supported by Mahmood’s quick-fire 28 and captain Tanveer Nadeem’s patient 43. The total would have been more if it wasn’t for a committed and spirited bowling and fielding display by Rowant, with the pick of bowlers Cook who finished with 5-75.
Rowant’s run chase started positively but the pressure began to tell after some tight bowling from Bilal Afzal (4-45) and Mohammad Shafaqat (4-36).
As Rowant tried to up the scoring rate, wickets began to tumble and they were soon reduced to 119-7 as Twyford seemingly headed for victory.
But some late resistance from the Aston Rowant tail ensured they finished on 156-9 and denied Twyford full points.
Twyford now turn their attention to a home match with Long Marston tomorrow, where a win would put them in pole position for promotion.
